Data sharing in transboundary water management
نویسندگان
چکیده
Half the world's population resides within 310 transboundary lake and river basins shared among 151 riparian nations. Approximately 60% of these lack cooperative frameworks to share water. The complexities sharing water necessitate identifying approaches for managing international freshwater resources. While much has been written about histories, theory, mechanisms management, conflict, cooperation nations, we draw attention scholarship what believe is central tool cooperation: data sharing. 1997 United Nations' Convention on Law Non-Navigational Uses International Watercourses (UN Watercourse Convention) recognizes resources vital basin cooperation. Data builds trust between states, aids in mitigating improves environmental, economic, social outcomes. Despite calls increase support few papers review role including how often types information are shared. We synthesize conflict collaboration from peer-reviewed management year UN went into force, 2014 May 2022. outline scholars argue water-related be shared, frequency sharing, facilitating waters.

Hot Stuff: Would Climate Change Alter Transboundary Water Sharing Treaties?
By signing an international river sharing agreement (RSA), countries voluntary commit to release water in exchange for a compensation. We examine the robustness of such commitments to reduced water flows. We focus on RSAs that satisfy core lower bounds and fairness upper bounds. We characterize the constrained upstream incremental RSA as the core and fair RSA that is sustainable during the most...
متن کاملA Southern African Perspective on Transboundary Water Resource Management
Southern Africa is characterized by a large number of international river basins, inherent climatic variability, and a natural maldistribution of perennial rivers. The region also has a history of political instability, driven by liberation struggles against the former colonial powers and the Cold War. Southern Africa’s transboundary rivers and their associated ecosystems could become either dr...
متن کاملWater, Water, Everywhere: Defining and Assessing Data Sharing in Academia
Sharing of research data has begun to gain traction in many areas of the sciences in the past few years because of changing expectations from the scientific community, funding agencies, and academic journals. National Science Foundation (NSF) requirements for a data management plan (DMP) went into effect in 2011, with the intent of facilitating the dissemination and sharing of research results....
متن کاملAnimal Waste Regulation and Transboundary Water Quality
Control of animal waste has been a major policy challenge. We identify the properties of efficient regulation and suggest that effective policies to control animal waste will enhance utilization of manure in local production and may change land allocation among crops. We also show that policies that aim to control local environmental problems, ignoring spillover among regions, may be significan...
متن کاملScience-policy processes for transboundary water governance.
In this policy perspective, we outline several conditions to support effective science-policy interaction, with a particular emphasis on improving water governance in transboundary basins. Key conditions include (1) recognizing that science is a crucial but bounded input into water resource decision-making processes; (2) establishing conditions for collaboration and shared commitment among acto...
